What Laura Wore: Black and Gold

I wore this outfit for a night out dancing on Thursday evening; our friends were back from a trip across Europe, and when they arrived at our flat, they were most definitely still in the party spirit! What else was there to do except throw on some sequins and an easy LBD and join in the fun?!

My black cage dress was a gift from my boyfriend's sister - she bought it from Missguided and never got round to wearing it, so I got lucky on a trip home! It's sat in my wardrobe for about seven months, as I just wasn't sure about it, but once I put it on I didn't know what I was worried about. It fits like a glove and actually looks far better on than on the hanger. The thick material really sucks you in, so there's no concern like you normally get in a bodycon-style dress. The cut-out thing isn't really "me", but I feel like it worked on this dress, purely because all of the detail was around less overtly sexy areas, like the back and collarbone, rather than on the tummy or waist.

I paired the dress with one of my favourite pieces, a bronze-gold sequin kimono. I picked this up on a sale rail in Primark for £5 and fell utterly in love with it; it's the perfect thing to throw on over a t-shirt and jeans to dress it up, but the muted tones of the sequins somehow help to dress down an LBD, and make it look more cool than glamorous or try-hard. Odd. The oversized fit works really well too, especially against the tight-fitting cut of this dress. It covered up the back detail of the dress but I think it worked and I liked the effect. Personally, I just don't like the whole thing of looking like you've spent the entire afternoon getting ready - it's a bit try-hard for me, and I'd rather just go with whatever comes to mind when I'm getting dressed, and work from there. I feel it always looks more natural, and you feel more comfortable, rather than spending forever primping and preening yourself into almost a different person!

To finish off the look, I wore my trusty Allegra dupes from eBay, again to help toughen up the dress and add a cooler vibe, and a black and white pleather laser-cut clutch from New Look. I wore my hair pulled right up into a high ponytail like this - again, not my usual look at all, but I wanted to show off the back of the dress when the kimono was off, and I felt like the neckline would be too fussy with my hair down. It's good to have a bit of a change, I've worn my hair this way since Thursday as I liked it so much. A flick of eyeliner, and a slick of bright pink lipstick, and I was ready to dance the night away!

Do you like this look? What style do you like on a night out?
